Karangasem, desabersuara.id – The Karangasem Regency Government, through its Environment Office (DLH), continues working to reduce the volume of waste piling up at the Linggasana landfill in Buana Giri Village, Bebandem District. One proactive step is turning organic waste into useful fertilizer.
Karangasem DLH head I Wayan Wiguna explained that organic waste arriving at Linggasana is not simply left to pile up. It is collected and fed into a shredding machine. The shredded material is then mixed with cow manure each month to ferment, a process that turns the waste into ready-to-use organic fertilizer that enriches the soil.
However, Wiguna acknowledged that processing faces significant obstacles when incoming waste has not been sorted. Organic waste mixed with plastic and other inorganic materials is much harder to process. Sorting organic and inorganic waste at the household level therefore remains the main challenge.
“We are encouraging behavior change starting at the source of waste, especially households. Don’t mix all your waste and then expect it to be solved at the landfill,” Wiguna said.
Wiguna noted that if residents consistently sort their waste at the source, processing at Linggasana will be much faster and easier. Besides easing the burden on the landfill, this brings a double benefit: creating economic value in the form of fertilizer from something once considered useless, and building collective awareness of keeping the environment clean.
