DENPASAR — The Ministry of Transmigration is partnering with universities to achieve animal protein self-sufficiency. Deputy Transmigration Minister Viva Yoga Mauladi said this during a visit to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Udayana University (FKH Unud), Bali.
As Beritasatu reported, Viva Yoga said transmigration areas hold about 3.1 million hectares of potential land that could be developed for modern cattle farming. The land is expected to become a base for national meat and milk production while creating jobs for transmigrant communities.
Gap Between Demand and Production
National demand for beef and buffalo meat stands at about 794,290 tons, while domestic production is only 421,210 tons. The gap is wider for milk: demand in 2025 reached about 4.7 million tons, while production was only around 820,870 tons. The shortfall has largely been met by imports.
Viva Yoga therefore invited Indonesia’s 14 veterinary faculties to take part, from research and livestock health support to preparing human resources in transmigration areas.
Linked to the Fishing Village Program
Beyond livestock, animal protein development in transmigration areas is also linked to the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (Merah Putih Fishing Village) program to strengthen protein supply from fisheries. The government–campus collaboration aims to turn transmigration areas into new food-based economic growth centers.
