Kondisi Atap Bangunan KDMP yang ambruk di Desa Demung, Kecamatan Besuki, Kabupaten Situbondo, Jawa Timur

The front canopy of the newly completed Red and White Village Cooperative building in Demung, Besuki, Situbondo, collapsed on 30 October. No one was hurt, and the contractor has begun repairs.

Situbondo, desabersuara.id – An unexpected incident occurred in Demung Village, Besuki District, Situbondo Regency. The front canopy of the newly completed Red and White Village Cooperative (KDMP) building reportedly collapsed suddenly on Friday, 30 October 2026. Construction of the facility, intended to support the local economy, had only been completed in June 2026.

The damage has raised questions about construction quality, as no extreme weather preceded the incident. H. Samsuri, chair of the advisory board of the Situbondo branch of the Association of Indonesian Village Governments (DPC APDESI), said when contacted by journalists that the canopy’s collapse was not related to any natural disaster such as an earthquake, but happened suddenly without a clear cause.

Demung Village Head Aguk had not given an official statement, as he could not yet be reached by the media.

Besuki District Head Yakup Alek Susanto confirmed the incident on Monday, 2 November 2026. Based on observations at the site, the front canopy most likely fell because a supporting steel beam came loose from the roof structure. “From what we can see, it was the supporting steel that came loose,” Yakup said.

Fortunately, no one was killed or injured, as construction had been completed and no workers or residents were under the structure when it fell. Yakup added that he did not yet know whether the building had been formally handed over to the KDMP management at the regency level. The contractor that built the facility has reportedly begun repairing the collapsed section.

The incident is expected to prompt authorities to tighten supervision of technical specifications and material quality in public facility projects, to ensure the safety of residents who will use them.
